MarkLogic are an interesting and rapidly growing company in the enterprise space right now:Â essentially they replace the relational database model in ways that make their next generation purpose built tools fit your unstructured data. Their servers coral all the heterogeneous information companies create to index everything they see, pulling together information in context.
I read with interest about Color , a new social photo app that was much in the news today. The main angle of coverage was the size of the pre-revenue company's funding - $41 million from Sequoia and Bain. Hell, the company isn't just pre-revenue, it's pre-product.at least for now. Tomorrow the actual product launches. If it works as advertised, it may well be the first truly execution of augmented reality that truly scales.
Presenting to the 2500+ partners at the Esri Partner Conference was another milestone for me. I was able to speak from the heart about our vision to transform civic engagement. The positive feedback was humbling and encouraging. What seems to be capturing folks imagination is our BIG vision and our strategy of building products for the mobile and web that take the friction out of the of the process.
First of all, if your organization uses DB2 for z/OS, I hope that you have a DB2 monitor on the system. While several of the DB2 DISPLAY commands provide information that's useful for monitoring activity on a DB2 subsystem (a favorite of mine is -DISPLAY BUFFERPOOL(ACTIVE) DETAIL), for an in-depth view into what's going on you really want the capabilities of a monitor tool at your disposal.

Since I started doing research on CAPTCHA security two years ago, I have relentlessly collected samples of all the different schemes I have encountered. In this blog post, I want to share with you five of the most crazy, funny, and interesting schemes I collected.
On March 11, 2011, Virginia resident Peter Comstock filed a class action complaint against Netflix, Inc. in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California. According to the complaint, Netflix “tracks its users’ viewing habits with respect to both videos watched over the Internet…and physical movies ordered through the Internet and watched at home,” while encouraging “subscribers to rank the videos they watch.

Working with international company workforces I’m often struck by the sheer diversity of individuals across cultures, age groups and skill sets who are confident in their ability to communicate and collaborate well. There seems to be a personality type that has a huge appetite for learning and using ever more frequent waves of new technology [.
As I noted earlier in the week , I had the opportunity to speak at a GM conference today. I was asked to peer into the future of the "app world," and deliver any divinations I might discover. I like a challenge like this, as it forces me to weave any number of slender threads of my current thinking into a more robust and compact narrative. Below is an updated version of a slide I presented today.

Yay, my new box of books from Amazon have arrived! I bought several Wrox Press "Professional" books on SharePoint 2010 and ASP.NET so I can continue my skill development in those technologies. After my work with a large oil and gas services company as their Enterprise Content Manager, I am continuing down the SharePoint road rather than building CMS solutions from scratch (for this season at least).
Speaker: Ben Epstein, Stealth Founder & CTO | Tony Karrer, Founder & CTO, Aggregage
When tasked with building a fundamentally new product line with deeper insights than previously achievable for a high-value client, Ben Epstein and his team faced a significant challenge: how to harness LLMs to produce consistent, high-accuracy outputs at scale. In this new session, Ben will share how he and his team engineered a system (based on proven software engineering approaches) that employs reproducible test variations (via temperature 0 and fixed seeds), and enables non-LLM evaluation m
This is fixed in the recently released Foxit PDF Reader v4.3.1.0218. That release is marked as an important security update , although this file bug is not mentioned. Recently, I've been playing around with the various JavaScript APIs available in various different PDF readers. In case you wanted to do the same, I made some little tools, including a simple one to execute PDF-based JS via an URL: [link] The serious bug I found in Foxit PDF Reader permits arbitrary files to be written with arbitra
A new French law containing several key amendments to the French Data Protection Act and creating a new public authority referred to as the “ Defender of Rights ” ( Loi n°2011-334 du 29 mars 2011 relative au Défenseur des droits , or the “Law”) came into effect on March 30, 2011. The Defender of Rights, whose role is to defend civil rights and liberties, to promote children’s rights and to fight against discrimination, also will serve as a member of the CNIL’s plenary committee.
Sharepoint 2010 is now a credible platform player for collaboration and business social networking. The larger challenge: Changing user perceptions of what the tools are for, and what you can do with them.
I posted earlier about my conversation with Matt , from that post: When WordPress.com was split off into the for-profit company, many were concerned it would quickly become clogged with ads, but Mullenweg and his partners have been extremely careful in how they've introduced marketing into the community. Experiments include FoodPress , EcoPressed , and others in partnership with my company, Federated Media , as well as one-off sponsorships with Microsoft around IE9, and some clever use of Google

Kaizen (æ¹å) is a Japanese term meaning “change for the better&# , referring to a philosophy and practices that focus on ‘continuous improvement’ of processes in manufacturing, engineering, supporting business processes and people management. In its purest form it’s a daily process, the purpose of which goes beyond simple productivity improvement with its ability to cross [.
If you were to write a brief history of Twitter, its zenith might prove to be surprisingly similar to San Francisco’s summer of love, 3 months in 1967 when as many as 100,000 people converged on the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood. I live a few blocks away from that area, which is still a tourist attraction - I [.
Google today did something smart in social - they offered a human way to do something they had already offered - the ability to indicate your approval of a search result. Previously, you could push a result up or down, but that action was not social in nature. Now you can "+1" a search result, so as to indicate the result was good and/or valuable to you.
A couple of days ago I was speaking with Reuters reporter Connie Loizos, who's been covering the Internet space since the days of the Industry Standard (she worked at the Red Herring). She was working on a story questioning whether there was a new bubble brewing in our space, a question that many have asked in the past few months, in particular as it relates to private financings of startups.

( image ) I flew to Detroit today, and thankfully Delta had wifi. Since I'll be speaking at a GM conference later in the week, and the fine folks from Pandora will be there, among others, I went and checked in on the site, which I'll admit I haven't visited in some time (I still consume music the old fashioned way - I buy CDs and rip them to iTunes).
I love that Facebook is testing real time conversational advertising. In short, the idea is that the right ad shows up on someone's Facebook page when they declare some intention. As the Ad Age coverage puts it: Users who update their status with "Mmm, I could go for some pizza tonight," could get an ad or a coupon from Domino's, Papa John's or Pizza Hut.With real-time delivery, the mere mention of having a baby, running a marathon, buying a power drill or wearing high-heeled shoes is transforme
This one has bugged me for some time, but I've not had the time to write it. Now that I'm on a plane for the next four hours, and it has Wifi, I can finally get around to bitching out loud about the photo below: '. Now this photo was widely discussed when it was released by the White House, a few weeks ago. Folks speculated on who the people were that we couldn't see (the woman with her back to us?

It was fun to open last week's event with Robert Stephens, who has grown Geek Squad from 2 people to more than 20,000 in the past 15 years. Highlights include his view of advertising ("a tax for poor products") and his confirmation that yes, every Best Buy employee will, in fact, get a tablet sometime soon.
I've agreed to be a judge in Intel's Visual Life contest, the details of which can be found here. Intel has been a partner and supporter of both my work as well as Federated's for as long as I can remember, and I was honored to join my former partner Chas Edwards, among many others, as a judge of the content. The contest invites folks to upload visuals of their life - either photos or videos - and will have HP prizes in multiple countries for four different categories.
Today I spoke at Sony HQ in front of some Pretty Important Folks, so I wanted to be smart about Sony's offerings lest anything obviously uninformed slip out of my mouth. To prepare I did a bunch of Google searches around Sony and its various products. Many of these searches are what I call "head end" searches - a lot of folks are searching for the terms I put in, and they are doubly important to Google (and its advertising partners) because they are also very commercial in nature (not in my case
This is a story of a radio station - you know, those old school, pre-Internet media outlets that folks my age grew up listening to. I've always been rather fond of radio, in a nostalgic way, and I've had an off again, on again relationship with it over the years. For the past few years, it's been mostly off - I only listen to AM sports radio (my beloved Giants) and NPR on FM.
Large enterprises face unique challenges in optimizing their Business Intelligence (BI) output due to the sheer scale and complexity of their operations. Unlike smaller organizations, where basic BI features and simple dashboards might suffice, enterprises must manage vast amounts of data from diverse sources. What are the top modern BI use cases for enterprise businesses to help you get a leg up on the competition?
(cross posted from the FM Blog ) In just a few days I'll be welcoming 200 or so digital marketers to Signal Austin , the second edition of FM's Signal conference series - regional, "mini" versions of our highly-acclaimed annual New York event. Our first Signal - based in LA - focused on content marketing. I'm proud to say it was both oversold and very well received.
I've fallen down in my promise to RSS readers out there (all 250K+ of you). I told you I'd post summaries of my Signal work each week, and it's been more like each month. Well, here's an attempt to rectify my failure, below, the past seven Signals. I'll try to do this more often. Monday Signal: The Moral Corporation? Friday Signal: TGIF, no? Thursday Signal: Yahoo's Not Done Searching; Why Color Matters.
