In late 1862, after supporting numerous military operations near Norfolk and Richmond, the USS Monitor received orders to move south to Beaufort, North Carolina. In 2002, the famous turret was raised from the sea floor. On December 30, 1862, off of the Outer Banks of North Carolina, the Monitor encountered a bad storm.
